Thaniyam is a village situated along the banks of the Triprayar River. The Manali and Kurumali rivers merge at Adilakuzhi to form the Karuvannur River, which flows through Vadakkummuri village of Thaniyam Panchayat and along the eastern border touching Kizhupillikkara village. Flowing southward through Edathiruthy and Kattur panchayats, the river becomes famous as the Triprayar River. (This river is also known as the Canoli Canal.)
Thaniyam Panchayat came into existence on October 2, 1953. At that time, the panchayat had 8 wards, including one double-member constituency.
The place name “Triprayar” is believed to have originated from the combination and contraction of two words: “Thirupurain” and “Ar.” “Porain” was a title used by the Chera kings.
